Granny flats and rentals
Granny flats are everywhere in the Shire, and each one needs its own compliant smoke alarms. If the flat is rented, the landlord's obligations apply to it as well as to the main house. NSW landlords must keep alarms working, check them every year and replace them within the manufacturer's recommended period. Hardwired alarms must be repaired or replaced by a licensed electrician.
In two-storey homes, which are common in Menai, Illawong and Bangor, you need an alarm on each level. Interconnected alarms mean a fire downstairs wakes everyone upstairs.
Bushfire-prone areas
For homes backing onto bushland in Heathcote, Engadine, Loftus and Bundeena, smoke from outside can sometimes set off alarms near doors and windows. We place them to meet the rules while keeping false alarms to a minimum.
Smoke Alarms FAQs
Does my granny flat need its own smoke alarm?
Yes. Each dwelling needs compliant smoke alarms of its own.
Should I interconnect my smoke alarms?
We recommend it in any home with more than one alarm. It means everyone hears the alarm wherever the fire starts.
How old is too old for a smoke alarm?
Check the date on the back. Most need replacing after about 10 years.
