Time for a new switchboard?
- Ceramic fuses, or a board with only one or two circuit breakers
- No safety switch, or one safety switch covering the whole house
- Tripping when the pool pump, air con and oven run together
- You're adding a granny flat, studio or shed with power
- You're adding an EV charger or solar battery
- Scorch marks, buzzing or a hot smell around the board
What we see in Shire homes
Much of the Shire was built in the 1960s and 70s: brick and brick-veneer houses in Sutherland, Gymea, Jannali, Kirrawee and Engadine. Many still have the original switchboard, sometimes with a few breakers added later. Menai, Illawong and Bangor came later, but even 1980s and 90s boards often have too few safety switches by today's standards.
Granny flats and backyard studios are common across the Shire. These usually need a sub-board and a properly sized submain from the house, and that is often what pushes an older switchboard to its limit.
What's included
- New board with circuit breakers and safety switches to AS/NZS 3000
- Every circuit tested and labelled
- Sub-boards for granny flats, sheds and pool equipment where needed
- Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work
- Advice on spare capacity for future solar, batteries or an EV charger
Pricing
The price depends on the number of circuits, the condition of the existing wiring and whether a sub-board or meter panel work is needed. We'll inspect first and give you a fixed written quote.
Work on the meter, service mains or the supply cable into the property is Level 2 work, which we do not do. If your upgrade needs it, we refer that part to an accredited provider. See Level 2 electrical work.

Switchboard Upgrades FAQs
Do I need a switchboard upgrade before adding a granny flat?
Often, yes. A granny flat needs its own sub-board fed from the main board, and older boards may not have the capacity or space. We'll check before you commit.
Will I be without power all day?
Usually only for part of the day. We'll tell you the shutdown window in advance.
Can you plan for solar and a battery at the same time?
Yes. We'll leave room and capacity so the next upgrade is straightforward.
